Surfaces First, Because the Coast Is Hard on Them

Soulofthegarden is a kitchen remodeling contractor in Carlsbad, California. Most of what we do happens at counter height: replacing countertops, setting backsplash tile and slab backsplashes, swapping sinks and faucets during a counter change, and fixing the ventilation that decides how wet a kitchen stays after dinner. Some jobs are part of a larger remodel with new cabinets. Plenty are just a new top and a new wall behind it.

We ended up here because the coast keeps teaching the same lesson. A kitchen within a few miles of the water spends a lot of mornings under the marine layer. Cold stone and glazed tile sweat. Grout stays damp. Plated hardware near an open window slowly loses its finish. A surface that would last untouched in a dry inland house needs a little more thought in a cottage near the Village or a townhome in Aviara.

How We Approach a Job

We look at the room before we talk about materials. Where the sink window faces, whether the hood is ducted to the outside, how the cabinets under the sink have held up, and how much maintenance you honestly want to do. Those answers usually rule out a few materials and make the choice between the rest easier.

We will also tell you when not to spend. A granite top that looks dull may only need cleaning and sealing. A backsplash with stained grout can sometimes be regrouted rather than torn out. A leaking faucet is not a reason to replace a counter.
